Sally Field, 76, Fought Ageism in Hollywood Throughout Her Career and Never Got Plastic Surgery

At the age of 76, Sally Field stands out in Hollywood by not succumbing to the pressures of cosmetic procedures that many celebrities face. Despite the prevalent societal expectations and ageism in the industry, Field has chosen to embrace her natural self.

Born in 1946 in Pasadena, California, Field initially gained fame through television series like “Gidget” and “The Flying Nun.” Transitioning to film, she starred in iconic movies such as “Smokey and the Bandit,” “Norma Rae,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” and “Forrest Gump.”

Recently honored with the Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award in February 2023, Field delivered a gracious acceptance speech reflecting on her illustrious career, which includes two Academy Awards, three Primetime Emmy Awards, and two Golden Globes.

Known for her activism and described as ageless and talented, Field expressed her perspective on acting during her SAG Achievement Award speech. Clad in a beautiful black dress with her natural gray hair, she radiated beauty and grace.

Speaking about her character Doris Miller in 2016, Field addressed aging with acceptance: “I’m an old woman, 70 is old, and that’s okay. I’ve gathered strength behind my years, I owned them, I’ve earned them, I’ve deserved them, I have a right to have them.”

Field has consistently advocated for aging naturally. In a 2009 interview with Good Housekeeping, she discussed resisting the urge to undergo cosmetic procedures throughout her career, emphasizing the importance of respecting one’s current self.

She stated, “I see myself on TV, and I say, ‘Oh, I wish that weren’t happening to my neck. And your face is falling down, and your eyes are so puffy.’ But then I see some of the women (who have had plastic surgery) who I thought when they were younger were so beautiful. Now I think, Oh, dear, don’t do that! And it seems to be terribly disrespectful to who they are now.”

Sally Field’s decision to embrace her natural aging process has garnered appreciation, and many admire her for staying true to herself, finding beauty in authenticity at any age.
