The beloved former Tonight Show anchor Jay Leno recently experienced a tough time in his life. He was severely injured in two separate horrific incidents that happened to him in a short period of time.
It all began in Leno’s Los Angeles garage as he was restoring an old automobile. A horrible car fire broke out, resulting in extensive destruction and second and third degree burns on Leno. He was treated for nine days at the Grossman Burn Center at West Hills Hospital.
Leno suffered a broken collarbone and two ribs in a motorbike accident on January 27, just over a month later. The 73-year-old comic is unfazed by these regrettable occurrences and has no intention of retiring.
Leno recently discussed his retirement plans with Page Six. Leno presently presents Jay Leno’s Garage and the NBC game show You Bet Your Life. He stated unequivocally that he has no plans to retire, barring a major health catastrophe such as a stroke. Leno made it clear that he won’t stop working until his health requires him to.
“I don’t intend to retire,” Leno angrily stated. “Until I have a stroke, in which case you slow down.” He knows he will have to retire when his health no longer permits him to work.
In spite of his recent mishaps, Leno has demonstrated incredible fortitude. Only a few days following his nine-day hospital stay, during which he underwent many grafting procedures, he gallantly resumed driving and even made a site visit. And a little over a week later, a packed house at the Comedy Magic Club in Hermosa Beach, California, welcomed Leno back to the stage with standing ovations.
Leno addressed the automobile fire incident in an interview with People, admitting that working with cars might lead to accidents. He did stress, nevertheless, that this particular episode was more important than others. Leno became aware of his dangerously near proximity to the pilot light while troubleshooting a clogged fuel pipe in a 1907 White Steam Car. He remembered that incident clearly, describing it as if his face were on fire and feeling like he had been hit with a “full face of gasoline.”
Leno started his recuperation journey with the help of medical treatments like skin grafting and hyperbaric chamber sessions. Leno refused to take medicine during his hospital stay because he saw it as a reminder of his error. Notable friends and family members had showered him with love and care; Russell Crowe had called, Tom Selleck had sent flowers, and John Travolta had given him a huge Italian basket. During his difficult period, Leno found great comfort in their support.
